Hey there - I’m Jen Blume. I’m an NTP (Nutritional Therapy Practitioner), and I’m a Firebrand About Food.
I started on this journey with the goal of healing myself from autoimmune thyroid disease (a.k.a. Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis), and I’ve made spectacular progress so far. My healing journey inspired me to learn more about nutrition and wellness, share my experience with the world and help others find their way to optimal health.
I’m a certified Nutritional Therapy Practitioner. I have a B.A. in Psychology, a husband, daughter, step-daughter and step-son (all grown). I live in Beaverton, Oregon with my husband, my Mom and a very feisty Australian cattle-dog mix named Meggie. When I’m not reading about nutrition or wellness, you’ll likely find me enjoying the outdoors somewhere, working on some house project or in the kitchen cooking with my mom.

My entire adult life I’ve had an ongoing battle with my weight and various health issues. It wasn’t long ago that I felt like I was at the end of my rope. I was at my heaviest and was dealing with constant migraines, terrible allergies, chemical sensitivities and regular edema in my feet, ankles and legs. I had random, unexplained rashes popping up. I was fatigued and had major brain fog. Basically, I felt like total crap. Then I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis. After that diagnosis, I at least had a why for some of the symptoms I’d been dealing with. I needed to get in gear and do something to get my health back.
I started to research autoimmune diseases and read many, many stories of others healing themselves and putting their autoimmune conditions into remission with a whole foods, nutrient dense diet. I was all in. I learned how anti-inflammatory and healing the ketogenic diet can be and decided to give it a go. The first couple of weeks were hard, and I had major cravings for carbs and sugar, but after the 3rd week, my edema was almost completely gone. My migraines were also abating, my energy was better and I was feeling pretty good.
I spent a little over a year on Keto and, during that time, I lost a little about 65 pounds, virtually banished those life-long migraines, have zero edema -- ever, and my environmental allergies have improved dramatically. During that time, I tried a Keto variation of an auto-immune elimination diet to identify food sensitivities and learned that I’m sensitive to gluten, corn and eggs -- so they’ve been banished from my life. I’ve never felt better. I’ve now transitioned to a “slow carb” diet which allows for a little more carbs than Keto does in the form of nutrient-dense foods like quinoa, wild rice, half a sweet potato here and there, and some winter squash.
I’m thrilled to put all the knowledge I’ve gained from the Nutritional Therapy Association program to work helping others find their way to optimal health through nutrient dense, real food.
